Those who want to convert a media file into a different output format need to choose the platform for the playback such as CD, DVD, KIOSK, WEB, Apple Device etc. Once the platform is selected the next step will be the selection of the output format. Selection of the output format is the most crucial part of video conversion.

The output format is selected according to the playback method preferred by the audience. Though there are numerous formats for the videos, the most frequently used video output formats include, MPEG, H.264, AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV, MKV, AAC, DVD, VCD.


MPEG is Moving Picture Experts Group. Since MPEG has an international standard it has more compatibility. In addition, MPEG ensures a better compression ratio. It can reach up to the ratio 200:1. MPEG has four output formats – MPEG.1, MPEG.2, MPEG.3 and MPEG.4.

MPEG.1 is the initial compression standard. It is used as the standard for VCD and includes the Layer 3 audio compression format. It can be applied to different pieces of equipment like CD, VCD and CD-ROM. MPEG.1 has wide applications such as in digital telephone network and education network. It is also used for audio transmission on the internet.

MPEG.2 offers better image quality and higher transmission rate. It is used for broadcast-quality television. This format is used in digital satellite TV services, digital cable television signals, and SVCD.

MPEG.3 was designed for HDTV. However, when it was found that MPEG.2 is suitable for HDTV, MPEG.3 was omitted.

MPEG.4 is mainly for videophone, videomail and electronics. This format requires lower transmission rates between 4800 – 64000 bits/Sec. This format is ideal for interactive AV service as well as remote monitoring.


H.264 for the Apple devices enables the creation of video files that are suitable for playback with iTunes, iPod, and Apple TV. H.264 FOR Blu-ray is specifically for the Blu-ray disc. H.264 for DVD Studio Pro has a variety of applications including HD-DVD.

H.264 is the standard for the digital video codec that is compressed very high. It is also called MPEG-4 Part-10 or MPEG-4 AVC. This format can cover a wide range of code rates as well as video resolutions. It works on all kinds of systems and networks like DVD storage, multicast, RTP Network etc.


Audio Video Interleave is a multimedia file format introduced by Microsoft. It belongs to the Video for Windows technology. This format can contain both audio and video data in the file container. The format is mainly used to store video information from TVs and movies of multimedia discs.


It is an abbreviation for MPEG-4 Part 14. MP4 file is used to contain MPEG-4 media. It not only includes MPEG-4 audio and/or video, subtitles, images, but also allow for 3D graphics, menus and user interactivity.


Window Media Video is the video file format for proprietary codecs of Microsoft. It has a higher compression ration when compared to MPEG.2. This format is suitable for network broadcast and transmission.


It is a MPEG 4 video container file format. It is compatible both with Mactonish and Windows platforms. MOV is the default video format of QuickTime.


It is a Matroska (English word derived from the Russian word Матрёшка) file designed to store video and audio files. MKV is mainly used as an alternative to AVI and MP4.


Advanced Audio Coding is developed by Dolby, FhG, AT&T, Sony, and Nokia. It is a standardized encoding for digital audio. It is the default format for iPod, iPhone and iTunes. It is also the standard format for Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.


It is the abbreviation for Digital Video Disc. This format is normally used to store video as well as data. The DVDs can store data 6 times more than that by CDs. The DVDs can be played on computers as well as dedicated players.


It stands for Video Compact Disc. This digital format is used for storage of video on a compact disc. The VCDs can be played in dedicated players and also in the video game consoles.
